Kopiec Kraka.

Krakus Mound, legendary hill close to Cracow's city centre. A bit of mystery close to the busy streets.

Kopiec Kraka, legendarne wzgórze nieopodal centrum Krakowa. Trochę tajemnicy w pobliżu ruchliwych ulic. Wedle legendy jest mogiłą króla Kraka usypaną przez okoliczną ludność.

Badania archeologiczne prowadzone w latach 1931-34 pozwoliły ustalić, że powstał około VII-VIII wieku. Kopiec opiera się na drewnianej konstrukcji pokrytej ziemią i kamieniami. Na szczycie rósł kiedyś dąb, co mogłoby świadczyć o kultowym charakterze tego miejsca w czasach przedchrześcijańskich.

Archeological research from the years 1931-34 showed, that the mound was constructed around 7-8th century. It is based on a wooden construction covered with ground and stones. On the top there used to grow oak, which could proe the religious character of this place in the pre-christian times.

Według innej hipotezy, razem z Kopcem Wandy, Wzgórzem Wawelskim i Kopcem Krakusa II wiąże się on z obecnością Celtów na tych terenach i był częścią ich kalendarza astronomicznego.

According to another hypothesis, together with other cracovian mounds (Krakus II, Wanda) and the Wawel Hill it's connected with the Celts presence on this lands and was a part of their astronomical calendar.

W XIX wieku Kopiec włączono w obręb obwarowań austriackich, wzniesiono tu koszary. Do tego czasu odbywało się w jego okolicy we wtorek po Wielkiejnocy święto Rękawki, festyn ludowy wywodzący się ze starych kultów słowiańskich. Obchody te przeniesiono pod pobliski kościółek św. Benedykta. Zabudowania wojskowe zburzono w okresie międzywojennym.

In the 19th c. Mound was included into the austraian fortress system, the barracks were put up. Till that moment the Moound was a place of the Rękawka celebrations, a popular picnic originating from the old slavic cults and it takes place every year, on Tuesdays after Easter Sunday. The celebrations were then moved nearby st. Benedict's church.The barracks were destroyed before the II World War.

Z Kopca rozciąga się całkiem przyjemny widok na Kraków. Dosyć stromym podejściem wspinamy się na 16 metrów od podstawy, czyli 271 m. n.p.m i rozkoszujemy się :).

From the Mound we can see a nice panorama of Cracow. After climbing the steepy path we reach the 16 metres high mound, 271 metres above the sea level. We can admire the view :).
